You might be at risk of losing your SNAP benefits.
In 2025, President Trump and Congress imposed stricter work requirements on SNAP recipients who are able-bodied adults without dependents. Brooklynites who receive SNAP should review the changes outlined below to determine if they need to take action to keep their benefits.
What are the new requirements?
Starting March 2026, you must complete 80 hours per month of approved work, education, or volunteer service each month to keep or qualify for SNAP benefits.
Previous exemptions may no longer apply.
New requirements apply if you are:
- 18 to 64 years old and
- Do not have a physical or cognitive disability and
- Do not have dependents under 14 years old
Even if you are:
- A veteran or
- Homeless or
- A foster care youth 18-24 years old
You will receive an ABAWD Work Activity Letter notice from the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) if you or anyone in your household is subject to ABAWD work rules.
