Students Are Enrolled in John Dewey High School’s Business and Culinary Academy, Which Provides Technical Training and Career Pathways to the Restaurant Industry
Open October 17-20, the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival Marks Historic Move to Brooklyn with the Invesco QQQ Festival Campus at Brooklyn Army Terminal for Signature Events Grand Tasting, Pier Parties and more
Brooklyn, NY – Today, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival (NYCWFF) announced a partnership to send 100 Brooklyn students to this year’s FoodieCon® presented by Fratelli Beretta. The selected students are enrolled in John Dewey High School’s Business and Culinary Academy and run “JD’s Place,” an experiential restaurant learning lab that exposes students to the rigors of running a fine-dining restaurant business. The students will travel to Industry City to attend the special event featuring the most influential content creators in the food and beverage community. Students will have access to panels, immersive activations, demos, and more offering insight into the world and business of food content creation.
“Brooklyn has some of the best restaurants not just in New York City but in the world. Innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs like the one at John Dewey High School allow our kids to get ahead of the curve and gain first-hand experience in all aspects of the culinary arts industry. Our partnership with the New York City Wine & Food Festival will further set these students up for success by providing access to the best chefs, entrepreneurs, and influencers in the business,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
John Dewey High School’s program is one of 84 CTE programs offered in Brooklyn. In 2019, John Dewey High School unveiled a $3 million state-of-the-art kitchen classroom for students to practice the culinary arts. In addition to hands-on experience in the kitchen, students are offered paid and unpaid internships, job shadowing, mentoring and partnerships through Grant Associates and CCAP (Careers Through Culinary Arts Program).
NYCWFF returns to Brooklyn from October 17 – 20, 2024, after more than a decade in Manhattan. Signature events such as the Grand Tasting and Best of Brooklyn kick-off party will take place at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, with additional culinary events, food tastings, and cooking demonstrations at locations across Brooklyn and Manhattan. 100% of the festival’s net proceeds will go to God’s Love We Deliver to support New Yorkers facing severe illness.
“We are so grateful to our Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso, and the New York City Wine & Food Festival for offering our students a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons, not only by experiencing different culinary traditions but also by gaining valuable insights into the world of hospitality, event management and fine dining,” said Heather Adelle, Principal of John Dewey High School. “It serves as an immersive educational experience, helping to connect our students with professionals and expanding their knowledge beyond the classroom, while fostering a passion for lifelong learning.”
“Being a student at John Dewey High School’s Culinary Arts program has opened so many doors for me. John Dewey’s Culinary Arts program also allows me to explore the wonderful layers of the culinary industry through various experiences and opportunities in and outside of school. This program inspires young chefs like myself to be the foodie that I am and is helping my dreams become my reality,” said Angelina Lorenzana, student at John Dewey High School.
“We’re not just moving venues; we’re intentionally embracing Brooklyn’s rich culture – something I’ve wanted to do for years and inviting its talented chefs to join us on this culinary journey,” said Lee Brian Schrager, NYCWFF Founder & Director. “Our aim is to provide them with an unparalleled platform to showcase their talent to a wider audience. We can’t wait to write this chapter with both our loyal supporters and new participants from the community of Brooklyn.”
