BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso today announced the launch of “Our City, Our Sanctuary,” a new initiative to support immigrant communities and ensure all New Yorkers understand their rights amid escalating federal immigration enforcement. The initiative brings Borough President Reynoso’s ongoing support for immigrant communities under a single umbrella, making it easier for Brooklynites to learn about their rights, access free legal support, and find trusted community resources.
“Brooklyn has always been a sanctuary where immigrants could find community and build a better life,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “Today, that promise is being threatened by the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda. With ‘Our City, Our Sanctuary’, we are making it clear: Brooklyn stands with our immigrant neighbors. Knowledge is power, and we are helping ensure every Brooklynite understands their rights and is aware of the vast array of resources that are available to support them.”
As part of the launch, Borough President Reynoso will host a series of Know-Your-Rights & ICE Awareness trainings across the borough. The first training was held earlier this month in Williamsburg, with additional workshops soon to be announced in communities seeing heightened immigration enforcement. Trainings will be tailored to each community, organized in partnership with city agencies and trusted local organizations.
The initiative also introduces a digital resource hub which will serve as a one-stop shop connecting New Yorkers to essential information and resources. The digital resource hub provides information about New Yorkers’ rights; outlines how to report discrimination, fraud, and federal misconduct; and connects residents to nonprofit organizations offering legal services and more. The resource hub will be amplified via a LinkNYC campaign on view across the borough.
Brooklynites hail from more than 100 countries and speak over 150 languages—they are at the heart of our neighborhoods, shaping the culture and identity of our borough every day. The federal government’s mass deportation agenda has made many families feel afraid in their own communities amidst reports of heightened racial profiling; the violation of due process rights; and the detention of lawful residents, including U.S. citizens. “Our City, Our Sanctuary” aims to remind New Yorkers that support is available and that all New Yorkers, citizen or not, have rights and protections under the law.
