BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso hosted a homecoming celebration yesterday for New York Knicks point guard Jose Alvarado. The celebration was hosted in partnership with Grand Street Settlement, Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams at the Williamsburg Community Center. 268 community members – mostly young people – joined the boisterous homecoming to meet with Alvarado, get his autograph, and receive New York Knicks swag provided by Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation. Both Borough President Reynoso and Public Advocate Williams presented Alvarado with Proclamations marking his return to New York City.
“Stars are born in Brooklyn, and Jose Alvarado has long proven himself one. Now, Jose gets to shine for his hometown as a New York Knick, and I could not be prouder to welcome him back home,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “Both Jose and I are proud sons of the Southside of Williamsburg, and this celebration is all about showing the next generation of children from our neighborhood what’s possible with the help of hard work and your community. I’m so excited to welcome Jose back home, and I cannot wait to see all that he accomplishes as a New York Knick.”
Jose Alvarado was raised in Williamsburg and began his basketball career playing for Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens. In February of this year, Alvarado was acquired by the New York Knicks, marking a return to New York City for the Williamsburg native after playing for the New Orleans Pelicans since 2021.
“I am deeply grateful to Brooklyn Borough President Reynoso for honoring my homecoming today with a community celebration and proclamation,” said Jose Alvarado of the New York Knicks. “I show my love for this city every time I step on the court, and today was an important reminder of how much this city and Williamsburg mean to me.”
”Jose’s story is deeply rooted in Williamsburg, and today was about making sure our young people could see that up close,” said Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez. “When someone who grew up on these same blocks comes back to give back, it leaves a lasting impression. I am proud to celebrate Jose’s homecoming and the young people who will walk away from today believing their dreams are within reach. Let’s Go Knicks!”
“It’s a Brooklyn homecoming for one of our own, Jose Alvarado. He’s showing our young people what’s possible. Thank you to Borough President Antonio Reynoso for your partnership and steady support of youth,” said Robert Cordero, Chief Executive Officer of Grand Street Settlement.
