“We can only advocate for ourselves effectively when we understand the full extent of power we hold – that’s what this session with the Public Engagement Unit is all about,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “Right now, thousands and thousands of New Yorkers are struggling with rising rents and facing displacement from the blocks they’ve long called home. What so many renters don’t know, however, is that their apartments might be rent-controlled or -stabilized, they might be experiencing an unlawful eviction, or they might be dealing with living conditions that their landlord is legally obligated to address. I’m so grateful to the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit for teaming up with our office, my fellow elected officials, and so many other organizations and agencies on behalf of tenants’ rights in Brooklyn.”

Partners who will be tabling on site and providing additional resources for tenants include:

  • Flatbush Tenant Coalition
  • IMPACCT Brooklyn
  • Legal Services NYC

The session is presented in collaboration with:

  • NYC Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit – Tenant Support Unit
  • NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs
  • Brooklyn Children’s Museum
  • Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke
  • Assembly Member Brian Cunningham
  • Council Member Chi Ossé

The first session, hosted on February 21 at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Heights branch, was presented by the NYC Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services (HRA/DSS) and discussed resources for cash assistance, employment services, child support services, homelessness prevention, and more. The NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) presented the second session of March 23 at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Grand Army Plaza location and focused on safe and effective methods for rat prevention in homes, buildings, and communities. The Office of the Brooklyn Borough President partnered with NYC Department for the Aging for the third session in April, bringing resources to help older adults to Brooklynites.
